KOTA BARU: For the past five years, Kelantan has exceeded the national HIV infection ratio by four times.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said for the year 2008 and last year, the National HIV infection ratio was 13.3 and 10.8 respectively for 100,000 people.

However, Kelantan recorded a ratio of 47.0 and 37.2 ratio, he said.

Cumulatively, Kelantan also recorded the highest number of women infected by HIV with 1,211 cases, followed by Johor (1,124) and Selangor (1,107) cases, Liow said in his speech at the launch of the state-level World AIDS Day 2010 at Pengka lan Chepa here yesterday.

His speech was read by Health deputy director-general (Public Health) Datuk Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman.

Liow urged Kelantan and other states to implement the Gempur AIDS programme immediately to curb the spread of the disease.

On another note, Liow said as religion played an important role to curb AIDS the Health Ministry, with the cooperation of the Malaysian Islamic Deve lopment Department (Jakim) and Malay sian AIDS Council, had produced an Islamic manual on HIV/AIDS that was launched in August.

He added that the manual had information on prevention of drug abuse, treatment, support, counseling, discrimination and other relevant knowledge for Muslims.

“My ministry and Jakim have disseminated information on how to address this issue to more than 1,500 imam and religious school teachers to promote good health practices,” he added.
